THE GRILLING GREEK

London, UK

Lately, around my area of work, Kings Cross, I have grown quite bored of the usual lunching options and so The Kerb has become my saviour whenever I wanted to try something new and refreshing. The Kerb King Cross is a food market located just off the newly completed Granary Square, and attracts many food vans and karts that spread their deliciousness across London. It has become the place where up-and-coming restaurateurs and newly established food places go to promote their name. On my latest visit to the Kerb I finally got to try The Grilling Greek, a food van serving delicious souvlakis (Greek style fast food wraps), which I’ve been hearing a lot about lately. I went at 12:30 pm on a Tuesday and to my relief there wasn’t much of a line ahead of me. The van itself with its blue colours and Greek accessories screams Greece and was very in tune with the culinary offerings about to be enjoyed. The menu options are threefold where you can choose a pork, chicken or halloumi souvlaki. All are served with red onions, tomatoes, and Tzatziki (Greek yoghurt mixed with garlic, cucumber and mint) wrapped in pita bread. I was particularly hungry on that day so I opted for both the chicken souvlaki and the halloumi wrap, as well as a side order of the French fries that are cooked with oregano and topped with feta cheese.  The friendly staff prepared the food quite quickly and within five minutes of ordering my food I was ready to dig in. Both wraps were exceptionally delightful and refreshing (thanks to the Tzatziki), very easy to eat and not messy at all since they were cleverly wrapped. The halloumi was grilled and very light, and the chicken was nicely grilled although a bit burnt in some parts. What I didn’t particularly enjoy was the pita bread, as it was a bit too doughy and at many instances disguised the flavours of the other ingredients. Also, the French fries were excessively oily and over-cooked, and I only managed to eat a few, so I would not recommend them. As an alternative to my usual lunch spots, the Grilling Greek has proven to be a successful lunch option, but I would not go as far as travelling out of my way to go to it, but I will definitely return on my lunch breaks when I am strapped for choice to have another souvlaki.

Dinner at Pescatori Friday evening with some friends was certainly not planned. Along with some friends we walked down Charlotte Street in Fitzrovia in search for somewhere to eat. Following three unsuccessful attempts in finding a place at Gaucho, Bubbledogs and Navarro’s we finally landed in Pescatori managing to find a table. Having been down Charlotte Street many times, the restaurant goes by unnoticed but it is worthy of attention as the secret is not in its appearance but in its flavours. The menu offers a wide range of Mediterranean seafood dishes with some meat dishes, which one of my friends shamefully ordered at a fish restaurant! To start we sampled the Octopus Carpaccio with fennel and tomatoes, the Monkfish and Tuna Carpaccio and the Dorset Crab Bruschetta which was served with an avocado salad. The Octopus Carpaccio was sublime and managed to dispel any initial doubts I might have had of the restaurant; the Monkfish and Tuna Carpaccio wasn’t as great, as the raspberry dressing didn’t compliment the tuna at all. The Crab Bruschetta was also good and the side avocado salad with its citrus-y infusion complimented the crab quite pleasantly. To follow we ordered the Native mussels which came served with chili garlic and a tomato salsa, and it proved to be very yummy and full of flavor. The Seared Loch Scallops served with a cauliflower puree we also palatable and luscious, however the portion was quite small and kept us wanting more. The Veal Milanese however was not as good as the seafood dishes but was still acceptable, but not worth ordering again. Overall Pescatori proved to be quite an enjoyable dining experience; it served great seafood with great wine and the staff was friendly and attentive which made us all leave with happy stomachs and big smiles.

APERO

London, UK

I went for Saturday brunch at Apero, a relatively new Mediterranean restaurant in the Ampersand Hotel in South Kensington. I tried to book the week before, but it was completely packed. Curiously, this time they wouldn't even take our names down when we called as they had so much space. So we ate more or less alone in the refurbished cellar. The vaulted cellar is pleasant-looking; I can imagine it works well for dinners at night too. Considering we were practically the only people there, it took a while to get our brunch. The Eggs Benedict were well presented, with flambĂ©ed hollandaise sauce. This was a nice touch, but unfortunately made it a tad dry. The same goes for the waffles; they were in need of more melted butter, but otherwise very good. The Gin Bloody Mary was an interesting and successful drink. Overall, Apero finds itself lost in being in a ‘no man’s land’ territory in that it attempts to revive an East London vibe within the highly established neighbourhood of culinary institutions of South Kensington. I could recommend Apero, even though it doesn’t quite reach the standard of London’s top brunch spots; it is worth noting.
